Mr. Peethamparam Sivalingam 1983 – 1984

Peethamparam Sivalingam fondly known as Siva and P. Siva Sivas pioneering efforts are seen with the formation of the Badminton Association of Ceylon in September 1950, with late M/s N. M. De Silva, Arthur Chandrasena, Sufiyan and Marzook Othman and also M/s Basil P. De Silva, Dinker Mutukrishna and A. R. L. Wijesekera to name a few.Siva excelled as a player, captain, and official of the game. In 1949 the Ceylon Badminton squad also was a true sportsman, a friend to all, a gentleman in every sense and a man of few words. Born in Malaysia received initial education at Victoria Institute Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and later on at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, and University College, Colombo. As a Civil Engineer he was attached to the Public Works Department and then to Shell Company of Ceylon.Siva was involved in a large number of sports and reached the national level in table tennis, badminton, lawn tennis and hockey, was an intelligently and skill full player.In 1953 he was the first national champion and went on to win the triple crown at the inaugural championship. In 1954 he captained the first official team of Ceylon at the “Thomas Cup” championship against Pakistan in Colombo and in 1957 led the “Thomas Cup” the team again against Japan in Colombo. was the President of the Badminton Association of Ceylon from 1964 to 1971 and later on with the change of the name to Sri Lanka Badminton Association was the President from 1975 to 1978. Siva lived down Fernando Road, Wellawatte. situated down Fernando Road. Cosmopolitan Sports Club was the place all top players played at that time also played badminton for the Wellawatte Recreation Club at Moor Road, Wellawatte and the YMCA, Fort.P. Sivalingam had moved out of the Govt: Service to the private sector after a distinguished career at the Shell Company of Ceylon. Mercantile Badminton Association was formed on the20th February 1982. Siva was the 1st President of Mercantile Badminton Association He helped the association in a great way to develop the game by imparting his knowledge, skills, and experience to the younger generation.
His name will undoubtedly go down in the history of the game and the Badminton Association as a pioneer, promoter, and pillar of the Mercantile Badminton Association
& Sri Lanka Badminton Association.

Mr. Eraj Wijesinghe 1985 – 1987

Mr. Mallory Eraj Wijesinghe is the Chairman of the Bartleet Group of Companies.He has been associated with the Plantation Industry for over 47 years.Mr. Wijesinghe is the immediate past Chairman of the Colombo Stock Exchange (from 2003 to 2006).At national level, Mr. Wijesinghe held the position of Honorary Vice Consul General of the Netherlands to the Republic of Sri Lanka and Maldives from 1972 to 1990.He is the past Vice President of the Asian Badminton Confederation. He was also a Council Member and the Chairman of the Administration Committee of the Badminton World Federation. He has also been the President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association and President of the Mercantile Badminton Association.
He held the position of Vice President of the National Olympic Committee. He has been President of Colombo Rowing Club in the years, 1980 and 1981 and the President of the Rotary Club, Colombo Mid City from 1990 to 1991. Mr. Wijesinghe held the position of President of the National Council of YMCAs in Sri Lanka. He was also the Vice President of the Asia Pacific Alliance of YMCAs. Mr. Eraj Wijesinghe held the position of Vice President, World Alliance of YMCAs during 1973 to 1976. He was the Chairman of the Sri Lanka YMCA Tsunami Response Task Committee.He was a Trustee of the Diocese of Colombo, Church of England and a Council Member of the Ceylon Bible Society. Mr. Majour S J Weerasena 1988 – 1989

Major S.J. Weerasena is a product of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda and is a commissioned army officer from the Sandhurst military Academy in the UK. He represented Dharmasoka College in badminton in the years 1956-1959, and was the junior national runner-up in 1958 and 1959.He was the Vice President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) in 1963 and is a former manager of the Sri lanka badminton teams that toured many countries including UK, Spain, Nepal, Malaysia etc.Maj. Weerasena was appointed as Vice President of the Mercantile Badminton Association (MBA) in its inaugural year 1982. He continued as a Vice President from then on until 1987. He was elected as president of the MBA for the years 1988 and 1989.

Mr. Raja Molligoda 1990 – 1991

I studied at Ananda College Colombo and represented the senior Badminton team which won the Inter school A Division championships

Went to UK and studied for the National Diploma in Agricultural Engineering and obtained a First Class. At present I am a Member of the Institute of Agricultural Engineers UK member of the Institute of Agricultural Engineers Association of Sri Lanka and Associate Member of the Charted Engineers of UK. When the MBA was re vitalized in 1982 under late Mr Vithalingam as the President I was appointed a Vice President and continued till 1989 During Mr. Eraj Wijesinghes Presidency the MBA conducted two International Tournaments and I was appointed Chairman of the Tournament Committee for both tournaments.

In 1990 and 1991 I was appointed as the President of the MBA and was also Vice President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association. The Minister of Sports appointed me as the Chairman of the SLBA Selection Committee during the years 1990 and 1991. I wish MBA all the Very Best and hope that they will succeed in their every endeavor.

Mr. Jayantha Kudahetty 1992 – 1994

Jayantha Kudahetty represented Royal College at Badminton for many years and won awards and colours. He also Captained the Junior and Senior teams. He later represented the country as a schoolboy at Junior International Badminton Tournaments both in Sri Lanka and overseas. He is also a National player and winner. During his tenure as the President of the Mercantile Badminton Association, for the first time, an invitation International event was conducted in Sri Lanka to promote the sport. The John Player International Badminton Championships which attracted many renowned overseas players was such a success that it was held once again a few years later. Afte rending his term,hewas elected and served as a Vice President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association.

Mr. Deshamanya S. Palitha Kannangara 1995 – 1997

Mr. Kannangara is a keen Badminton player and being the President of the Mercantile Badminton Association of Sri Lanka, and Vice President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association he has being also instrumental in bringing the game of Badminton in to International standards.He has been the President of the Sri Lanka Regional Centre of the WFB and Member since 1982. He has served in the Executive Council as Secretary,
Vice President, Deputy President, President and Immediate Past President, and also served as Secretary, Co-Chairman and Chairman of the Socio-Economic Development Standing Committee of the WFB, and attended all International General Conferences of the WFB since 1984.As the Secretary of the Socio-Economic Development Standing Committee of the WFB, he played a major role in conceptualising the structure of the proposed Bank and co-ordinated all establishment committees, which was later established as Sampath Bank. He is at present serving in the Board of Directors of Sampath Centre Ltd and Sampath Surekum Ltd. too.He is a Senior Investment Banker by profession with 47 years of Banking Experience at Peoples Bank and Sampath Bank. He is also at present serving as Chairman, Savi Telelanka (Pvt) Ltd, and Director in many Financial Management Companies. He is also the present Managing Director of Nation Lanka Securities and Investments Ltd, a Merchant Bank in Sri Lanka.A Graduate of the University of Sri Lanka, Peradeniya, specialized in Economics, he has undergone Postgraduate programme in General Management at the National University of Singapore, Postgraduate Development programme on Chief Executive Officer/General Manager jointly conducted by Harvard, Stanford and NUS Universities. He also attended Postgraduate Development programme for Head of Institutions conducted by the MasterCard University in St. Luis, USA. He has also undergone Banking Training at Lloyds Bank and Barclays Bank in UK and Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation in Singapore.

A keen Rotarian for 19 years and he has served as Secretary, Director, Vice President and President Elect at Rotary Club of Colombo Central and also Treasurer and Chairman-Vocational Service in the International District 3220 representing Rotary Club of Colombo Central. He has also participated in many international Conferences and for the Sister Club agreement delegation with Rotary Club of Suita West, Osaka Japan. Mr. Kannangara is a keen photographer having received many international awards and served in the Board of Photographic Society of Sri Lanka.

Mr. Gamini Jayasuriya 1998 – 2007

Gamini Jayasuriya is a product of Ananda College, Colombo.

Chairman/ MD of Temple Publicity Services (Pvt) Ltd. Also a proprietary planter.

Nirodha Thusith De Costa represented Anthony’s college Katugastota Badminton since 1975 for many years and won awards of eagle, wing & colours he also captained the Junior & senior teams. Won many schools, all island & national level events. Badminton national pool player from year 1981-1989.

Was an excellent athlete represented the college in Inter schools meets,Was a keen cub and a scout during schools days.played for MBA events from the year 1984, won many titles at MBA level later joined into MBA administration and held many official positions serving for long years. In the year 2012 elected as the president of MBA and re-elected once again in year 2013 & 2015 In year 2000 elected as one of the vice presidents of Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) then again re-elected for the year 2001-2003. Elected as president of Central Province Badminton Association (CPBA) in Year 2000 and re-elected for 2001-2003.

Became a qualified Badminton coach, served schools and produced junior national players in late 1980’s.

Nirodha became the initiator of the MBT to build the stadium & headquarters for MBA & is a trusted member.
